<p>It is a true story.  Through my so-far enjoyable experience in <a href="http://www.eveonline.com" target="_blank"><strong>EVE Online</strong></a>, none was encapsulating as my first (serious) w-space operation; risk and reward, I’ve gotten both.  The experience further incites my desire of becoming one of the wormhole dwellers with constructive (and hopefully, sustainable) PvP lifestyle.</p>
<p>I originally posted this on my corp’s forum, titled “<strong>When the inevitable comes, carebearing saves the day!</strong><strong>” </strong> Also, wall of text warning :p</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1353"></span></strong></p>
<p>It all started last night, at my home system, when I discovered a nice looking hole leading to C2 with perceived silence inside. The hole was at 50%~25% of its lifetime so I figured it was worthy to explore a bit more. I did that, and found a PoS with seemingly no activity. As I return with my slightly refitted Drake, I noticed that I wasn’t alone after all—two drakes on and off from my d-scan. But there were no combat probes, which was the reason I did not GTFO immediately. Everything followed was smooth, sleeper drones a bit harder than my drake’s usual targets, but at least there was no interruption. Later I refitted my salvage Cormorant with rigs and cloak, doing everything by the book, and returned home with every spoil from the sleeper wrecks.</p>
<p>Then I decided to practice on mobile target probing, -&gt; Drakes I saw earlier. I was surprised how easy it went. The Drake I found was drifting in space, and the conclusion I reached was that the guy was most likely afk and cloak malfunctioned; or maybe like others suggested, a trap of some sort. I was entertained by the idea of destroying it, but then decided against it. My carebear principle says, do not aggress an unknown party, and do not kill for the lulz. The afk person has no negative standing to the Uni, nor his corp appeared to be pirates or otherwise the undesirable kind. Therefore I resolved sending him a mail, reminding him how dangerous is to afk in w-space without cloak. I guess if the guy return from afk and saw he was podded and my mail would appear a bit like a sarcastic attempt for the lulz , because by someone else who happened to be probing—and not live on my carebear principle—could have the full opportunity to do what I did not.</p>
<p>This morning I found the hole is still at 50%~25% lifetime, which meant some more serious exploring (and profiting) could be done. I called in another unista operating in Lonetrek and went inside the hole together. Thanks to, G.F., for coming with me and endure that rather unfruitful and frustrating operation. We were rigorously pursued by the company of Drakes I saw inside the hole from last night—including the one that were afk uncloaked. Attempts to contact their pilots were ignored, and for about 40 minutes, we bounced between planets, safe spots and sites. Gladly during this (now amusing) chase, G.F. was able to salvage 4 nanoribbons, which in turn made the whole ordeal worthwhile… at least to myself, and I hope G.F. is feeling the same way :p</p>
<p>It became obvious that the hostiles would not stop probing us out and warp Drakes on us, and it was also obvious that they lacked the firepower to eliminate us during encounters; therefore we decided to end our somewhat silly operation. Shortly after, I tried to return the favor by going back to my Heron and littered the w-space system with combat probes. Then suddenly the system is without ship signatures.</p>
<p>After probing out two grav sites hoping for some easy and fast kills without being jumped on, I brought my Drake one again and cleared them out. Sister Combat Probes faithfully resurges on my d-scan as I was finishing up the first grav site. Toward the end of the second grav site, I was probed out once again and hostile Drakes warped in. I was already aligned to the sun and tried again to initiate conversation as I warped to the star with no success.</p>
<p>The dilemma was *to salvage or not to salvage*. I felt my opponent knew I would return for salvages, which is correct despite our mutual anticipation. I did return (after waiting a few minutes) with my Cormorant (which, in retrospect, probably is not a smart thing to do). To my amusement, one of the Drake who chased me was waiting at k-space side of the hole. I turned on MWD and bumped him (just saying Hi :p), and two other drakes jumped in. I was wondering whether I’ll get suicide ganked, until a chat invite came along.</p>
<p>Mr. S, representing our diligent chasers, was polite and pointed out the harsh truth of WH operation to me, which I entirely understood as the standard protocol in w-space. After I mentioned the fact that I did not blow up one of their Drakes when I had the chance, I guess that’s when I earned his acquaintance. He asked me how long I have been doing WH operations and I was being truthful to him. Mr. S is very helpful by giving me valuable advises on the subject.</p>
<p>The fail of losing my own drake came afterwards. Mr. S informed me that he and his gang would stay in the C2 system after the hole collapses. He also told me that there were other people inside the system now, and I made the decision to check it out by ratting in a combat site and eventually, somewhat anticipated, the aggressing party showed themselves… or rather, their scout. I briefly caught the cloaking scout ship on my overview and initiated conversation. I told him that I was just minding my own business of killing sleepers and kindly requested myself to be left alone. He did not respond.</p>
<p>Words from Mr. S said that the newly aggressing corp has bubbled and camped at a hole. I was foolish enough to warp back (at 100km) to the hole leads to my home system, and bang I was in the very bubble I tried to scout out and avoid –_– The predictable ensues as my ship was blown up and very luckily, the enemies did not pod me. They made a ransom of 100 mil isk on local, which was a bit absurd not only because my total implants worth only like 30 mil, but also with an inherited implication that I should consider the ransom because the hole leading to highsec will despawn in an hour, which they assumed that I then would be totally stranded in this system. The implication of my desperation is above the face value of my pride and actual cost of my implants combined was laughable.</p>
<p>As I discussed with my available options with Mr. S while dodging combat probes, it became clear that all Drakes from Mr. S’s corp are in fact, his alts. I then asked a big favor from him to probe out the static highsec exit for both of us once the current one despawn so I could avoid a Japanese “banzai” charge with my pod to the blockade, or the lesser dramatic option, which is of course, self destruct. Climax of the story: he agreed to help me with that.</p>
<p>This story needs a good ending and indeed it has one. The aggressing company, knowing probing me down is impossible and I had no intention to pay ransom, dissembled the blockade before the hole to my home system could collapse. Thanks to Mr. S once again for tell me that while I was on my alt so I could get my ass back to safety without incurring further lulz to the new –10 standing corp on my contact book.</p>
<p>The lossmail is very pleasant to my ego since most expensive modules are destroyed. 12 million isk received from insurance, plus 31 million made from salvaging mostly covered my numerical loss from the incident. Together with the intangible gain of befriending a WH veteran and tactical lessons could only be learnt through practice, I’d say that this is a hellishly good deal.</p>
<p>Note to self: Sisters probes are not needed and overly expensive for WH operations; always bring cloak; bookmark from above the exit wormhole; do not ignore any detail on any intel whatsoever.</p>
<p>Echoing the title of the story, there is a moral to learn. Do not be unkind to those who have not been unkind to you, yet be prepared if they turn vile. There are too many ways of making enemies unconsciously in this game; therefore, consciously making friends is the right thing to do.</p>

<p><a href="http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25968987278&amp;sid=1" target="_blank">As of now</a>, the <a href="http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25712374700&amp;sid=1" target="_blank">collective voice</a> of the <strong><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/" target="_blank">WoW</a></strong> gamers have claimed a victory against <a href="http://www.blizzard.com" target="_blank">Blizzard-Activision</a>’s notorious RealID plot.  Although I do not play the game and consequently I could care less about the whole thing, such attempt made by an MMO industry leader shall remain in infamy forever as a dark antithesis of MMO genre itself.</p>
<p>I have found a comment by <a href="http://www.massively.com/profile/4243803/" target="_blank">Jane</a>, on <a href="http://www.massively.com" target="_blank">Massively</a>, <a href="http://www.massively.com/2010/07/10/the-daily-grind-real-id-disaster-averted-or-is-it/" target="_blank">over the issue</a> that echos pretty much my stance.  <a href="http://www.massively.com/2010/07/10/the-daily-grind-real-id-disaster-averted-or-is-it/comments/29195173/" target="_blank">Read it here</a>.</p>
<p>Never can I understand the mentality of punishing rule-abiding posters by exposing their real-life identity just to reduce the amount of spam and trolling on a large gaming forum.  That aside, I am more alarmed at the fact that Blizzard, responsible for running the most <a href="http://gigaom.com/2007/06/13/top-ten-most-popular-mmos/" target="_blank">populated MMORPG on the planet</a>, is making a deliberate action like this.  I was afraid that if Blizzard could get away with pulling bullcrap like this, other online game publishers would have funny ideas of staging a fad that is radically opposing to a more general trend of recent years, which is the rising awareness on restricting the flow of personal information over the Internet.</p>
<p>Things turns out to be better.  <a href="http://www.gamersfirst.com/" target="_blank">GameFirst</a> stood up and gave Blizzard a well-deserved <a href="http://www.massively.com/2010/07/08/gamersfirst-promoting-anonymity-in-response-to-blizzards-real-i" target="_blank">slap in the <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">face</span> back</a>.  Then, of course, Blizzard’s bail.  Although looking at the nonchalent tone of Blizzard’s announcement, without words of apology but actually stated the retraction is “as of now”, I have to agree with Jane doubting whether the dragon will stay dead. </p>
<p>Rumors say Blizzard wants to somehow link their <a href="http://www.battle.net" target="_blank">Battle.Net</a> usernames with <a href="http://www.facebook.com" target="_blank">Facebook</a>.  As of now, the validity of the rumor is not a concern of mine.  But I think people should be reminded that MMORPG is fundamentally different from Facebook: the two entities are projected onto the two opposite of the Real/Virtual spectrum.  Facebook serves its function by bridging and expanding real-life connections with other people.  Individuals on Facebook interact similar to any real-life situations because everything ties back to one’s name and the network one belongs to.  On the other hand, playing MMO<strong>RPG</strong>, note the bolded letters, is about creating a character which the player role-plays in a programmed environment where the true variables are players themselves.  In game, a player is not judged by his/her status in real-life society but purely by their ways and actions in game.</p>
<p>My religious belief aside, numerous arguments have been made against RealID on how potentially dangerous it can be when virtual vendetta is carried over to real-life.  Although RealID doesn’t seem to be violating laws in most governments, I do wish to have the Big Brother keep an eye on any company that decides to release their customers’ real names in mass.  I’d also like to suggest people who don’t feel violated by RealID to name their character and forum username to their real names, while those who wish to remain a sensible level of anonymity will remain unaffected.</p>

<p>In <strong><a href="http://www.eveonline.com/" target="_blank">EVE Online</a>, </strong><em>Standing</em> with the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdkGv2uk2xo" target="_blank">four major Empires </a>is a numeric indicator of how much they like you, the capsuleer pilot.  A higher standing with a particular empire faction doesn’t do a lot: granting you access of higher level mission agents; useful if you decide to do missions for another NPC corp within that faction.  A negative standing will, inductively, will make your life a tad bit miserable in spaces controlled by that faction.  If your standing hits –5.0, your very intrusion to that faction’s territory will summon NPC police force whose goal is to destroy your ship and laugh at your wreck.</p>
<p><span id="more-1339"></span></p>
<p>On day one of my EVE journy, I was told to conform the political correctness regarding missioning–<strong>decline</strong>missions that involve blowing up NPC faction ships!  The reason is that blowing up faction (Gallante, Caldari, Amarr, and Minmatar) ships will lower my standing with that faction. Therefore in EVE, it is “politically correct” to maintain a high-enough standing to 1) not get shot by faction police and 2) can jump start missioning for a corporation of that faction without having to grind lower level missions.</p>
<p>Later I learned the catch: Gallante and Minmatar are in one political bloc, leaving Caldari and Amarr to the other bloc.  Therefore, as a Caldari, gaining standing with my own faction will lower my standing toward Gallante by 50% and Minmatar by 25% of the amount of standing I gained… (+50% with Amarr, though).  I guess this makes sense in the game’s setting but can be troublesome to new players… which brings me back to topic: there’s a one-time thing a newbie can do to gain standing with every empire faction–the tutorial agent mission.</p>
<p>First, consult the<a href="http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Tutorial_Agents" target="_blank"> list of tutorial agents </a>(not to be confused with career agents), make plans to visit each one of them, do the arguably easiest two missions in game, and gain 0.217% with your faction of your choice~  With 15 agents for every faction, one should gain a projected 2.80 standing (excluding Social skills and assuming you zero standing with the faction) per faction.  Of course that number mostly an overestimate due to your existing (and hopefully, positive,) standing with the faction.  Such boost, however minor, is all that’s needed for the “politically correct” to begin a comfortable space life within a foreign empire.</p>
<p>The cons for doing these missions are minimum… These starter missions are only offered once per agent; it requires you to travel pretty much a good portion of the empire space.  Please be advice that attempt made to generate optimized routes for more than 12 waypoints, according to EVE client, will take a “ridiculous” amount of time to complete.  Luckily I had only 13 waypoints to calculate, so it wasn’t *too* ridiculous (client froze up only for 3 minutes :p).</p>
<p>I apologize for the apparent tardiness of posting this artical… though just having finished training necessary skills to hop from a <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Caracal" target="_blank">glass canon</a> into a <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Drake" target="_blank">three-fold cardboard</a> overwhelmed my sense of responsibility <img src='http://blog.kgptzac.info/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Though I am not playing Mabinogi anymore at this moment, I am constantly looking for signs of that would rejuvenate my faith in devcat so one day I may once again be motivated enough to resume my Fantasy Life.  I made three conditionals:</p>
<ul>
<li>When I have time</li>
<li>When devcat revamps party system so the game is no longer “Solonogi”</li>
<li>When devcat fixes abuses/exploits in end-game stuff (such as blacksmith near-perfect)</li>
</ul>
<p>So I say to myself, if two of the three above conditions are met, I’ll be back to the game; sadly I don’t see that happen anytime soon.  Or… worse, devcat became demented–for<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uUqK8ueG74" target="_blank"><strong> introducing Hamlet into C4G13’s mainstream</strong></a>.  Yes, Hamlet, Shakespeare’s Hamlet.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">The reason I accuse devcat of taking their senselessness to a whole new level is rather simple: for Morrighan’s sake, Mabinogi is in a Celtic setting!  Yes, all the clothings added through updates aren’t very Celtic-centered but I could care less since they do not relate to the game’s plot.  I can also pretend that Alchemy and the middle-age architectures in C3 are something relavent.  But just why do they have to add Shakespeare’s stuff to this game?  Why?  Does it make them appear smarter by saying “hey, there’s some Shakespeare for YOU!”… I think not.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Even with all these nonsense, “having a more appropriate mainstream plot” is not in my list of consideration.  Sadly I see devcat shows no sign of actually refine party gameplay… this further proves my suspension that they have a dangerous inability; that is, the inability to rebalance features after introducing them to their creation.  To me, a competent dev team needs to do two things: update new stuff and fix old stuff; too bad there is nothing compels devcat to do latter competently.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">So, here is my proposal, devcat.  Now you are throwing Shakespeare at us.  I demand firearms, tanks, laser, and spaceships in further updates.  Seriously (not really).</p>

<p>Extensively browsing <a href="ｈｔｔｐ://www.pixiv.net#utm_source=feed&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=feed" target="_blank">pixiv </a>is a good way of wasting spare time.  Ocassionally the pleasantry blossoms when brilliant artists such as <strong>yajirushi</strong> (<em>やじるし</em> <a href="http://www5f.biglobe.ne.jp/~javan/chanoma/index.html" target="_blank">Homepage</a>; <a href="http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=13569" target="_blank">Pixiv</a>) shows up on my radar.  After acquiring permission from yajirushi-san, I am honored to present some of his works.  I was genuinely surprised to find out yajirushi-san is in fact, male.  Somehow the recurring female character in almost all of his drawings led me to believe that the artist is relating “herself”.  The strong resonance of the image of self and the warped perception of the surrounding–both in space and time–are most intriguing, personally speaking.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One component of <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/" target="_blank"><strong>EVE Online</strong></a>’s background story-building mechanism is the numerous official short fictions named <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/" target="_blank">EVE Chronicles</a> post on the official website as the official canon of the game.  Though I feel the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/articles.asp" target="_blank">scientific articles</a> are generally more interesting to read, some of the Chronicles no doubt have stood out for being brilliantly written.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=20-04-09" target="_blank">All These Lives are Fit to Ruin</a></strong>, written by CCP Abraxas, is one of the better chronicles.  It addresses some of the curiosity regarding the supposedly impersonal relationship of Capsuleer and his crew members.  The impression of “pod pilots can flying all size of ships solo”, is a justifiable one, however it is incorrect in theory.</p>
<p>And… the following copy&amp;paste of the Chronicle is for those who find reading a white wall of text over a black background an excruciating activity.</p>

<p>I’ve been reading stuff on MMO news sites when there’s nothing to do for work.  Out of the few popular ones, <a href="http://www.massively.com/" target="_blank">Massively</a>, which the above article is hosted, is clearly pumping out higher quality and more thoughtful columns.  Interestingly enough, many of Massively readers are either fans or “critics” of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com" target="_blank"><strong>EVE Online</strong></a>, an MMO I’ve been “playing” for the past month.</p>
<p>If there is such thing as MMO otaku (yes, the irony), I’d say EVE Online is one of the must-play game due to its distinct mechanics and unwavering drive to popularity.  Indeed, many aspects of EVE can be refreshing to traditional MMORPG players such as myself…  You are in a single game world composed of web of nodes of human habitants and their host solar systems.  You, the player, are represented as the spaceship you are driving, instead of a 3D model of a man or a woman that lives 20,000 years into the future from our time.  You can (legitimately) exchange in-game money and subscription time via in-game market.  Last but not least, you are to observe the game’s learning curve as of following:</p>

<p>I shall make no guess on under what mentality did the artist draw this graph.  The subtitle “Second Genesis” doesn’t look like an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansions_of_Eve_Online" target="_blank">expansion of EVE</a>, so I would be glad if someone can shed some light on the matter.  WoW’s learning curve is portrayed linearly may has something to do with people complain about the game being “overly casual-friendly”.</p>
<p>To further analyze the graph, it’s fairly easy to notice that the axes are kinda funny.  Even as a chronic gamer, I still think that “time” as a function of “gaming skill” does not make much sense.  According to this image, after spending the amount of time closer to reaching end-game in other MMOs, only then one truly begins to play EVE.  Going along the y-axis as time goes on, gaming skill seems to be dropping… many are perished during the trek; how sad (lol).  Finally, after some sacrificial(?) crucifiction, players become enlightened (with the help of a roadroller?) and acquire massive amount of gaming skill within a very short timespan, with few unlucky souls fall back in time (or do they become so delusional that they believe they are back in time??)</p>
<p>I firmly suspect that the image to be intentionally misleading in many aspects.  Though one thing I know for sure is false: it does not takes <em>that</em> much time just to get started in EVE.</p>
<p>Brendan Drain pointed out that one should not apply preconception from other MMO on EVE… something I was guilty of; though I didn’t begin to realize until several weeks after I started my Internet spaceship captain career.  I figured that with all the passive skill training, the most actively engaging PvE in highsec spaces is to kill npc ships in missions.  I did that and it soon devolved into a horrible drudgery.</p>
<p>Good thing is that I made another character preparing for the new Planetary Interactions came with <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/tyrannis/" target="_blank">Tyrannis update</a>.  I decided to try out my new method aiming to free myself from this lethal boredom: to stop “playing” EVE Online as a “game”.</p>
<p>Everyone may have a slightly different definition of the word “game”; in most cases, the distinction between a game and something else is clear enough.  But I would rather consider EVE as more like a <em>simulation</em>–in a sandbox–something perhaps closer to Second Life or Sims City than World of Warcraft or Mabinogi.</p>
<p>Ironically, this futuristic sci-fi sandbox “game” is more friendly to “roleplay” than the traditional medieval themed MMORPG.  While the traditional MMORPG offers immersion through engaging activity and persistent world and progress, EVE Online offers a vastly different kind of immersion that is not far from the “playing a spreadsheet” catchphrase–calculating, experimenting, and simulating.</p>
<p>The rather unique sociopolitical culture in New Eden is a direct resultant of the complexity and multiplicity of EVE Online.  In here we have role model for businessmen, combat pilots, leaders, diplomats, reporters, teachers… many, many “professions” that function just like their real-life counterparts.  What I see in EVE is not just a game, it’s a blindingly vivid reflection of the real world.</p>
<p>Maybe because of this underlying philosophy, EVE has an inadequate tutorial system and learning curve remains steep.  Yet EVE is advertised as an online game, thus new players will come and expect amount of guidance from the game that the game is not willing to offer.  Strangely I feel toward defenses saying that the new players should find a good corp and get much of their answer from real people…  though my logic tells me that consulting from plan B because plan A sucks is not a good defense of the planner…  Also, the game’s UI is its another downfall and a very good counter-example for interface designing; there are simply too many windows, too many right click menus, and an extremely limited hotkey reassignment scheme that is untrue to the spirit of sandbox.</p>
<p>Speaking from personal experience (however short it is), I would like to adopt Brendan Drain’s “this game is not for everyone” motto.  I am yet to find out whether this game is truly for myself… but so far, I’m liking it.</p>

<p>Parents just got a new Acer Aspire and moving the old eMachine to office.  The eMachine had Windows XP, and intuitively, I thought  Windows 7 would have no problem restoring the files and settings created using Windows XP’s built-in backup program.  Just like almost every other expectation I have for the progression in the Windows operating systems,<a href="http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7repair/thread/167a3939-8424-4c92-8d66-bf9f011b82c2" target="_blank"> I was wrong</a>, again, this time. </p>
<p>Hail for Microsoft earning another metal for screwing stuff up.  Of course, for every such screw up,<a href="http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/restore-bkf-file-ntbackup-windows-7-vista/" target="_blank"> there got to be a solution</a>.  The idea is: how much time do I have to waste searching before I find something that is supposed to be obvious?</p>
<p>The frustration did not just end here.  It then appeared that Acer had masturbated the hard drive by leaving an ugly 13GB recovery partition–undeletable under normal method, completely ignorant of the fact that<em> I have already made recovery disks with writable DVD</em>.  By “undeletable” I meant that using normal procedure under Windows 7, which is by running <strong>Disk Management</strong>.  Apparently Acer, or some higher force of Evil, decided that I must be protected from my own stupidity.  Yes, I agree that wiping the recovery partition is extremely unwise without any system back up… but come on, anybody who has the ability to look up how to start Disk Management in Windows 7 has to have the ability to understand the consequences of their actions.</p>
<p>Finally,<strong><a href="http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/02/29/delete-and-remove-to-unlock-eisa-hidden-recovery-or-diagnostic-partition-in-vista/" target="_blank"> there is a solution</a></strong> that does not (or not yet) involve using another OS.  This time the search time was well over 30 minutes.</p>
<p>However, the logic comes back to: why the hell can I not easily free the gigantic 13GB of space for a better use, when I already made the god damn recovery disks?</p>
<p>I have seen enough Fail from the manufacture to the OS maker for the past two hours.  I certainly <em>do not </em>want to deal with any of this kind of bullcrap when my new netbook ships in.</p>

<p>A rare showcase of generosity for Nexon and perhaps online game developers in general: Hangame JP released an offline demo of Dragon Nest as its open-beta date draws near.  Hangame JP is notorious for its almost xenophobic ip restriction.  Yes, they’ve done it to their Dragon Nest official site.  BUT,  <a href="http://www.steparu.com/news/open-beta-news/532-dragon-nest-open-beta-jp" target="_blank">Thanks and lolis are given to <strong>Steparu</strong> for the wonderful and timing news for the offline demo</a>!</p>
<p>Since I won’t put up with the bother of setting up a proxy, all information regarding the offline demo are inferred from the offline demo version itself.  In case you have no idea what I’ve been talking about, <a href="http://www.steparu.com/" target="_blank">steparu’s loli mansion</a> has some very detailed stuff regarding Dragon Nest.</p>
<p>This demo version includes the four lv16 characters for each class, a training course map, and two dungeon maps (with easy and normal difficulty).  Since the characters are preset, there is no level up and/or distribute skill points.  For those who are interested, the demo is dubbed in Japanese (however unimpressive).  The “story” starts as you being the hero to save a girl who went into forest and encountered danger &lt;Insert hackneyed plot here&gt;.  Not to pass overly harsh judgement at an early stage here but I just hope the shallow story in this demo does not represent the finished product.</p>
<p>Actually trying out the game confirmed most of my previous assumptions gotten from watching gameplay videos.  The character animation, lightning, physics, and camera, are excellent as expected.  On the other hand, textures–especially texture for characters, are very rough; so, has anybody wondered… is there a convincing reason for EyeDentity <em>not</em> to polish this aspect of their game just a little bit more?</p>
<p>Maybe because it was literally my first time playing this kind of action games, the experience was quite challenging.  I died 10+ times as Warrior at the last boss; good thing is that there are infinite amount of lives to waste away!  Again be reminded, the character skills are predetermined, so it may be hard to stop thinking “hey why do I have this skill on my bar that doesn’t do me any good?”</p>
<p><span id="more-1159"></span></p>
<p><strong>Warrior</strong></p>
<p>DPS machine.  Risk vs. damage output ration is very balanced; this class should be the most fun class in the game.  Warrior in this demo possesses a rich skill set that attacks incorporates different multitude of AoE.  And of course, all skills, save one are melee.  After clearing few group of mobs a way to organize skill combo becomes clear.  By skill combo I mean a sequence of skills to execute for the purpose maximize dps (in a relatively safe way).</p>
<p>My personal favorite weapon is the axe.  Not only it inflicts much more damage than the default sword, the axe also let the user to initiate whirlwind attack in basic attack combos (click left mouse key really fast :p).  It can be very useful when you are surrounded by mobs: you just do the natural thing: panic and press buttons really fast and really hard.</p>
<p><strong>Cleric</strong></p>
<p>Second most interesting class on my list.  First time seeing character selection screen I thought the cleric is either too eager for some action, or has inhaled some illicit substances.  Though after start playing the class I figure it must be him not careful enough with his lightning attacks so he zap himself, occasionally or constantly I do not know.</p>
<p>Yet the class is to be respected for his versatility.  Cleric has effective melee basic attacks that deals a good amount of damage in basic attacks, plus the inherited weapon bonus to stun and slow down foes.  He also deploys delayed and stationary attacks with different degrees of AoE.  I can imagine this class would excel even more in a real game, cooperating with others.  Last but not least, clerics can AoE heal and self-buff to block attacks–useful when killing bosses.</p>
<p><strong>Sorceress</strong></p>
<p>Queen of solo kiting is what I call her.  The class is quite capable of taking no damage at all in non-boss situations and just blast away her enemies (with the drawback of taking more time to pull that off, of course).  Majority of the stereotypical mage characteristics hold true for sorceress: low HP, high MP, powerful at ranged but easy to hurt when come close enough.</p>
<p>Sorceress has many tricks in her pocket like the previous two classes.  Basic attacks are bolts, mostly used to push mobs into position for more powerful AoE attacks.  Inferno is a column AoE that works in almost all situations.  There’s a nova-like ice skill to use when surrounded… and finally, an AoE that hits a large area with high damage but difficult to aim.  With a little practice I can assure you that the pleasure of abusing mobs with her abilities is beyond pleasant.</p>
<p><strong>Archer</strong></p>
<p>Archer of… fail.  Either I am badly missing something or most likely, acrobat just sucks in solo at lv16.  The “windmill” skill is pretty cool… though it’s a melee emergency skill.  In the demo, her archery skills are rather overlapping than flexible.  Unlike Sorceress’ magic, an archer’s basic attacks are required to aim very preciously for a hit to register.   It looks like lv16 is too low for that “<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFDK3K9DHm4" target="_blank">shoot-like-a-machine-gun</a>” skill fantasized in many gameplay videos.  Archery’s effective range doesn’t seem to be longer than that of magic skills.  Even with less AoE tendency and harder aiming process, archer’s DPS is still considerably lower than my sorceress performance.</p>
<p>Anyway, I am satisfied with being able to enjoy three out of four classes.  This offline demo shows both what makes this game great and why it still needs more polishing works.  With Dragon Nest CN beginning a more public testing phase in June, one could wish that Nexon NA will fulfill its promise for bringing Dragon Nest to North American within the year…</p>
